Race Reports by Vaughn Marshall

This Sunday-Aug 24th-Hugh Trenchard and I did a BC Masters 50 Km TT.

When we left Victoria, we were wondering if we were either die hard cyclists, or just plain crazy, because the weather was dreadful!

But, we soldiered up and drove up anyway. As we were at the starting line, it was still bucketing down.

The first right hand corner was pretty dicey, because it was a patch of shiny blacktop, and very slippery! It made me a little nervous, because I didn't see it until I was just about right at the corner before I saw it.

We got a little lucky weatherwise, because once we got going, the heavy rain stopped, and it was just a light sprinkle! But, it took me a long time to really get warmed up, and get into a proper rhythm. The course was a lot of rolling hills and the odd spot where you could actually get into high gear, and really motor.

We had a tail wind going out, but it was wasted, because it was mostly uphill going out, and then of course, we had a head wind coming back to the finish line.

My time was 1:26:05-which,  incidentally is, just 4 seconds slower than last year when Simon and I did the same race as a 2 up. So, that made me feel pretty good of myself!

Because it was a BC MASTERS race, which gives a handicap for your age-it's 30 seconds for every year up-I was 1st in time for my age group, but came in second, based on AGE-STANDARDS. The other rider in my age group(45-49) was 48, so he got the faster time.

But, I came away with Silver! I am happy with that, because of the weather conditions were less than ideal! Hugh came away with a Gold for his age group!
